Weidenfeld Scholarship Programme for Developing Countries

Registrations now open for Kaplan Graduate Awards-Panthera grant proposal

Applicants are invited for Kaplan Graduate Awards(KAP) which is a scholarship program that supports the conservation efforts of outstanding young biologists working on wild fields in situ.

Applications for projects on all wild cat species from all regions are invited. Awards vary up to $25,000 per annum. Awards are for one year but may be extended to subsequent years, contingent upon performance and results. The KAP is designed to support projects on wild cats with a conservation focus and must include a significant in situ component. Applicants MUST be post-graduates pursuing a higher degree (MSc. or PhD or equivalent).

The Kaplan Graduate Awards aim to support the next generation of wild cat biologists. This is a most prestigious award with a very competitive approval process. Successful candidates must demonstrate outstanding credentials in previous academic and conservation experience, particularly suitable field experience to undertake the proposed work, and a demonstrated history of publishing prior work, in peer-reviewed and/or ‘soft’ publications such as reports, magazine articles, etc.

The KAP will consider applications, up to $25,000 per annum, for both project and tuition costs. However, emphasis is given to projects requesting primarily field and research costs, and will not consider large requests for expensive first world university tuition, except in exceptional cases where-

  • The applicant is a national from a developing country; and
  • The applicant provides a convincing rationale that the training in question will provide critical graduate training that is not available in their home country.

In partnership with the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), Panthera has developed the Global Felid Conservation Genetics Program. For details on the program, please visit the Global Felid Conservation Genetics Program page.

Applicants may apply to Panthera for genetic analysis funding, however, the applicant must agree to process all genetic analysis through the AMNH.

Please note that organization will ONLY undertake genetic analysis for projects that include the following ‘priority species’: tiger, lion, jaguar, snow leopard, cheetah and clouded leopard.

How to Apply?

The Panthera Grants Committee meets twice a year to make funding decisions, with closing dates for proposals on March 1st and September 1st. Final decisions and awards are announced within 4 months of the application deadline. Proposal intake opens on January 1st and July 1st of each year, and closes on the respective due dates. Panthera’s grant programs are facilitated through an online grant management system, Foundant. All applications for Panthera grants must be submitted through Foundant. Applicants are only permitted to apply to one Panthera grant program per intake round.

Atsumi International Scholarship for International Ph.D candidates

Atsumi International Scholarship Foundation (AISF) provides scholarship to Ph.D candidates enrolled in the graduate schools located in the Kanto area in Japan.

AISF will sponsor gatherings which will give all recipients a chance to meet the directors, trustees and members of the selection committee. At the end of the academic year, recipients are also expected to report their progress at such a gathering. AISF will sponsor a three day Rest and Relaxation Trip to Karuizawa in July. Travel Grant for post-AISF students with Ph.D. Any Atsumi scholarship recipient who is awarded a PhD., will be eligible for a travel grant. This grant will cover transportation, lodging, and registration fees to attend a conference held abroad within one year of the recipient being awarded his/her Ph.D. If one lives abroad, the grant can be used to visit Japan.The monthly stipend will be 200,000 yen. AISF will award the scholarship to 12 students since 2000 fiscal year. A scholarship will be awarded for one year (April through March). No extension will be granted.

Selection Procedure-

After the preliminary selection and interview at the foundation office, final selection with an interview is made by our selection committee. All applicants and their schools will be informed of the results in late November.


  • A student from the world over with non-Japanese nationality who is enrolled in a graduate school in the Kanto area, and who is expecting to obtain his/her Ph.D. within the term of the AISF scholarship. This includes those who are enrolled in graduate school as researchers because of their going over the required period as a regular student, or because of their obtaining their Ph.D. from a foreign graduate school.
  • A student whose graduate school (or laboratory) and place of residence are in the Kanto area (Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama , Chiba, Ibaraki, Tochigi, and Gunma Prefectures)
  • A student who is interested in international understanding and friendship, and willing to participate in AISF sponsored activities.

WAAW Foundation Opens 2012 scholarships for African women

Working to Advance African Women-WAAW announce its 2012 scholarships offering $500 per year for need-based female African students admitted to a University, College or institute of higher learning in Africa. WAAW Foundation is a US based nonprofit organization emphasized on Working to Advance African Women. The mission of WAAW is to increase the pipeline of African women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) related fields, and work to ensure that this talent is engaged in African innovation.


Female students of African origin living in Africa, less than 40 years, who have gained undergraduate admission to an institution of higher learning in Africa and studying a STEM related course. The candidate must demonstrate financial need and excellent academic record. Special consideration is given to orphans, underprivileged students, girls impacted by HIV and students in the first or second year of study. 


Scholarship recipients will receive an award of $500 for the 2012-13 academic year, or the equivalent in their country’s local currency. Scholarship recipients may reapply for renewal the following year, with proof of continued excellent academic performance.

United States Institute of Peace invites applications for Jennings Randolph Peace Scholarship Dissertation Program to students at U.S. universities who are writing doctoral dissertations on topics related to peace, conflict, and international security.

Proposals from all disciplines are welcome.

Proposals should be consistent with the Institute’s mandate and present a research agenda with clear relevance to policy issues. Historical topics are appropriate if they promise to shed light on contemporary issues. Area studies projects and single case studies will be competitive if they focus on conflict and its resolution, apply to other regions and cases, or both.

Peace Scholar awards may not be made for projects that constitute policymaking for a government agency or private organization, focus to any substantial degree on conflicts within U.S. domestic society, or adopt a partisan, advocacy, or activist stance.


  • Project Significance- Does the project address an important topic of relevance to the USIP mandate and the field of international peace, conflict, and security studies?
  • Project Design- Is the project soundly conceived? Does it identify a key problem to be analyzed, and does it have a clear methodology?
  • Potential as a Peace Scholar- What is the applicant’s record of achievement and/or leadership potential? What is the applicant’s capacity to benefit from and make professional use of the fellowship experience in subsequent years?


Peace Scholar Awards are currently set at $20,000 for 10 months and are paid directly to the individual. Peace Scholar awards may not be deferred. They generally may not be combined with any other major award or fellowship except in special circumstances and with the written approval of the Institute.


Citizens of any country may apply. Applicants must be enrolled in recognized doctoral programs (for example, Ph.D., S.J.D., Ed.D., Th.D.) in accredited universities in the United States. Successful candidates must have completed all course work and examinations towards their doctoral degrees by the time their fellowships begin.

Ohio University announces Scholarship for International Student to Study Abroad

Applicants around the world are invited to fill applications for Ohio University which is providing Undergraduate and Graduate courses in any subject.

The International Student Study Abroad Scholarship supports Ohio University’s international students seeking to enhance their education with an education abroad experience. Awards average $750 and will be applied to awardees’ OHIO bill to offset the cost of the education abroad program.

This round of the award is for international students planning to study abroad during winter break 2012-13 or spring semester 2012-13 only. There will be a third round in March 2013 for international students planning to study abroad during summer and/or fall semester 2013.


  • Ohio University undergraduate and graduate students who are neither US citizens nor permanent residents of the United States and are participating on an education abroad program sponsored by Ohio University of at least 2 weeks in duration are eligible to apply. Applicants must have a minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA and be able to demonstrate the importance of participation on the education abroad program to their program of study.
  • Applicants must indicate the program to which they are applying, even if they have not yet completed the program application process. Awardees unable to participate on their education abroad programs will have their International Student Study Abroad Scholarship funding revoked.
  • Students undertaking internships, independent studies, and research for thesis hours are not eligible to receive funding from this award. If applicant are unsure if their education abroad program fits the criteria for this award, please contact the Office of Education Abroad.

The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) is seeking applications for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and related areas by graduate and undergraduate students. Five scholarships of up to 6,000 euros are offered for 2012-2013. One of them, the Cercle Lévi-Strauss scholarship, is financed by the Amis du musée du quai Branly ; the four others by the department of heritage and collections and by the department of research and education.

The monies are intended to cover the costs of a field investigation and/or of archival work to document the museum’s collections, as well as the analysis and writing required to present the results of the research work. Research may pertain to a single work, a series of objects or images (stamps, photos, etc.) a collection, an archival group (including audio archives) or ancient documents.

UCT has a limited amount of funding to provide financial support towards the cost for full-time international and refugee postgraduate students. It is important to note that the University of Cape Town:

  • Does not guarantee that any applicant will receive funding,
  • Does not undertake to provide full-cost funding to successful applicants
  • Strongly advises applicants to secure sufficient funding from external sources

The University of Sheffield do not currently directly offer scholarships for postgraduate taught students from Tanzania. However there are a number of external organizations that offer scholarships and funding to international students who wish to study in the UK.

Postgraduate research degrees eg PhD, MPhil

The University of Sheffield does not offer research studentships or funding specifically for Tanzanian students. There are, however, studentships and funding for which all international students can apply.
